1. I love Vrabel but he is slowing down. We can deal him to KC now and both sides can be OK with it, or we can end up letting him go end of season for nothing.
2. Cassel would be worth a ton more IF:
a. He was signed beyond this season
b. We didnt have 30 mill in QBs on our roster
c. Most teams who need a QB werent in place to pick a good looking one in the draft.
3. Lets say we let them both go at end of year. We pay 20 mil in cap room this year for 3/4 a starter and a great bench player and get a late 3rd in return.
So, we trade 2 players who werent expected to contrbute every down for the 34th pick (almost a 1st. but gets paid 2nd round money) AND get 20 mill in cap room for this year. I would have loved a 2nd pick in this deal, but overall it is a great deal for both teams. If we use this cap space wisely and make a good pick, we should get a cheap young starter and another starter for Vrabel (declining) and Cassel (hopefully a bench guy for us).
As for Gafney and Paxton, they got wayyyy overpaid. congrats to both of them. they will be replaced easily.
At first I hated this deal but now it looks a lot better once we see all the details.
BTW, calling BB a dingbat makes you look foolish. He just got the 34th pick for a guy who EVERYONE wanted him to cut last year and a 33 year old injured LB (who I hope goes All pro next year but doubt it)
I think it's possible that Belichick thought Vrabel was so overpaid that he was about to be cut now-- not allowed to play out the season and reach FA. So, he used a player he was about to cut as a throw-in for the deal. I still don't see how with so many teams that need a starting QB upgrade, that there wasn't a nice bidding war that resulted in at least two guaranteed 2nd rounders.
As far as "c", I don't buy at all that teams like Detroit rate Stafford or Sanchez over Cassel. I just don't see how that would be true. Knowing that a QB can play in the NFL, much less start and succeed, is priceless information. Cassel never looked like he was a bust at any point after a few weeks into the season, even though he didn't get hot until the last few weeks of the season. Detroit knows full well they could end up with the next Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, or Alex Smith. Cassel is not going to be a bust.
Also, the cap room is critical because we are going to have to break the bank for Wilfork (post-Haynesworth's deal) and Mankins will clean up, too.
